While I don’t love what has replaced Krakoa so far, this was one of the most promising books. That might sound strange because it has the blandest roster by far, and it’s using a title that doesn’t hold as much meaning as it used. At the same time… it’s Gail Simone. She’s one of the best writers in the business, known for her runs on Wonder Woman, Domino, and Birds of Prey, but for me, she’s remains my favorite writer for Red Sonja. So I had to give Uncanny X-Men #1 a chance.
You can tell that Rogue is one of, if not Simone’s favorite of the X-Men. This book truly captures her voice and what drives her, setting her up to be one of the leaders of the X-Men going forward. This isn’t the first time Rogue has had to step up as a leader, but it feels the most natural. She had so much on Krakoa, and lost so much. She could easily breakdown and quit like Logan or go off on her own like Jean Grey, but Anna-Marie doesn’t quit.
Rogue remains here to help, and while her roster so far seems rather bland, we do get hints of new and interesting characters, along with a new villain to be afraid of.
Don’t get me wrong, this is an introductionary chapter, and it does not hit the ground running. Rather, it’s pulling itself up from the crater that was the end of Krakoa, and stands up tall, ready to tell a compelling story.

I say this alot, that this is the first chapter, so it can always get better or worse, but based on the pedigree behind this book, in terms of writing and art, I think this will be one of the better X-Men books.
