Fall of the House of X #1 Review

The Fall of the House of X #1 is not House of X #1. It doesn’t feel like the beginning of the end of what that book established. Since House of X, the X-Men line has been about big ideas in small places. Characters who deserved the spotlight have been getting it, and their creative teams had something to say. And what they had to say felt new to the X-Men. This new feeling came from the fact that the X-Men were finally on top of the Marvel Universe. Mutants weren’t safe and universally beloved, but they were not on the outskirts of society anymore. House of X changed the game and added many wrinkles to it. The climax or ending of that beginning should feel the same.
It doesn’t. The Fall of the House of X feels like past X-Men events. The mutants are on the run and gathering their forces to make a final stand as the underdogs. Yes, the X-Men have been classically underdogs by nature, but this era felt like it was supposed to be different. The Fall of the House of X #1 feels like the start of a story we’ve read before, and because of that, it may feel a bit disappointing. It may even sour hope for what this finale entails, so forewarning before reading.
X-Men Events Can Feel Like Pizza, Even When It’s Kind of Cold, It’s Still Pretty Good
That being said, at least it does what X-Men books have done a hundred times, and does it well. The mutants feel like they have a fighting chance, and they’ll fight for their lives. The allies have been rallied, the threat is real, and it truly feels like anyone can win. The big difference between this event and others is that it feels like the X-Men and mutantdom won’t be alone for once. Finally, the Avengers and other humans are at their side, so the world still feels bright even when the night is at its darkest.
This is a good start to an X-Men event story-wise, and the art of X-Men events continues to be some of the strongest in the industry. It’s just… not the ending House of X seemed to be promising.
